I found these playful balls. They are the perfect size for a toddler and the graphics are kooky weird. These are a good example of product we carry that is off the grid of regular toy shops. They are a great soft pinkie ball squishy material.

New York always proves to be a treasure trove of inspiration. There is a crazy amount of energy in the areas that I shop for stuff for the store. The 20’s on the west side was teaming with African guys buying stuff to sell from Chinese vendors who had latino guys helping them pack. And me. We all got along and now I am heading home like a merchant traveling the sea for exotic products to bring back for her customers. Check out the vintage signs I bought today- somewhere.

Hello,

News around our nation….I find there are a multitude of reasons why I obtain an object. Here are three, a practical need (the bobino- a cord wrap that keeps me from earbud chaos), a creative fulfillment(the glitter glue pen set - a great way to label a package in expressive cursive) or something I might collect- from Texasware plastic bowls to cookbooks. This methodology then translates into the store and my buying.

Here are three items from those categories featured at Heartfelt in May; useful object, DIY tool or creative inspiration object, and an item I collect.

Useful Object

I like the “Pot Holder” because it is useful and humorous. A flexible silicon potholder made in the shape of a pot leaf. They are from a local company, Gamma Go. They are always a constant explosion of fun and funny product.

The Gamma Go potholder sells for $8.00.

DIY tool or Creative Inspiration Object

Here I could not choose just one so I gathered three from one supplier and they have to do with baking. Chemistry in the kitchen can be a relaxing fun project that lots of folks get to enjoy. The E-Z deco icing pen is a best seller from Nordic Ware. All their products are made in the USA. An icing tool that makes decorating cakes and cookies as easy as writing with a pen. A cupcake frosting decorator kit comes with a frosting dispenser and four tips, this enables you to make fancy cakes and cupcakes the way a bakery does.

A Collection

I am selling off my Kokeshi Doll collection….49 dolls. It is in our window now and is a great beginning collection of old and not so old wooden dolls. It’s likely that Kokeshi originated in rural Tohoku, in northeast Japan, during the Bunka-Bunsei eras (1804-29) of the Edo Period. The farmers there, coping with long, snowbound winter nights, probably made the dolls from scraps of maple, dogwood, or magnolia using a pulley lathe. These dolls were possibly intended as good luck talisman, designed to bring fertility or bountiful harvests.

Thanks for making our venture into the loose tea world a success already. We are selling a lot of tea, which keeps our stock very fresh. We bag it ourselves so let us know if you want a larger quantity.

Popsicle maker, a baby gift

Sometimes my customers are more creative gift giving wise than I am and in turn I learn from them. This weekend Laurel and Jose came in for a baby gift. They bought the amazing Zoku popsicle maker that easily makes homemade popsicles in 9 minutes. They felt that it would be different and lasting and help when the yet to be born baby is teething. Useful, helpful, soothing and a gift for the whole family. Thanks L & J.

Because I own a gift store I am constantly thinking about things. It is important that I am not just offering objects that in a year or two will be landfill. The other day I heard Terry Gross talking with the man who wrote that book on garbage. It is called “Garbology”. She said and I am paraphrasing here - I like getting rid of things. I have a small space and there is pleasure clearing out stuff. It seemed as if she was pleading a bit for him not to take away that pleasure. So what makes an object special? If it is useful, artistic, old, or if it really rings a bell within us and we start to collect in a theme. Then there are all sorts of substrata that influences what we purchase; money, our creative skills, the pleasure of gifting, our taste. I am going to ruminate on this for the next week or so. Here is a picture of one of my favorite objects. It is my late dad’s music box from when he was little.

We have a sale going on now but we are planning on a window with a French theme based on the Umbra little black dress jewelry holder that we just got in. Often a window is based on a product and then we just riff on it from there. I was disdainful of the little black dress jewelry holder, at first. But having just moved and reorganized my belongings, I thought I would give it a try. It is great and holds a lot of stuff in a very small space. Pretty, brilliant. Keep in mind I am still trying to collect French stuff for my window. I was chatting with Brook and she mentioned her boyfriend, Dave and his talent for sketching. She said he gave a demonstration of how he can draw from his head, I wanted to see. Here is what she showed me a chalk/marker rendering on Canson paper. His name is Dave Nomura and he is going to sketch the Eiffel Tower for the window! We cannot wait. Stay tuned!

I recently moved my home and I am enjoying unearthing objects and choosing spots for them. It makes me think a lot about what we cherish and what we pass on via Goodwill or Craig’s List or Ebay. I have done a lot of sorting and labeling of late. It is not just getting rid of stuff or keeping it. It is turning over memories and all the smells and visuals and heartbreak and happiness that comes along with them. Here is our mantel where I chose to put our deer antler rack.
